10 Simple But Powerful Remedies For An Easy Birth! You Can Start Right Now!

Do you want a birth as fast, smooth and painless as possible? I mean: Who doesn’t, right?!

Who already knows me knows that I was quite worried about birth and I wanted nothing more than a fast and painless birth. That is why I have tried to do EVERYTHING I can do. “Having is better than needing”, I always say. 😉

I will tell you what you can do to prepare your body for the birth process. But, of course, there is no guarantee that your birth will become everything you dreamt of. Every birth is different, every woman is different and every baby is different. But the following home remedies have been recommended to me by midwives and doctors, and some are even covered by health insurance if that’s not proof enough. 😉

So here we go!

Tips and Tricks for a Quick and Painless Birth


Please check which tips are suitable for the week of pregnancy that you are in! With some things, you can start immediately, with others you should wait for the 37th week. This is because some methods may be promoting contractions, even though this might be anything in the last three weeks before the ET. 🙂

You can do as many of these tips as you like or focus on one, you decide.

Raspberry Leaf Tea

The classic among household remedies! The recommendations for consumption vary slightly depending on who you ask and which packaging you read. But basically, you start at the 34th SSW and drink about one cup every day. Sometimes it is recommended to take a week break from the tea in the 37th SSW so that the body is not over-stimulated – sounds quite logical, I think. 🙂

The tea prepares the pelvic floor and the muscles for childbirth so that it is faster and easier on the day of childbirth.

Here you can get the tea or in the pharmacy.

Talk about the dosage best with your midwife, doctor or pharmacist. 😀 But really: good pharmacists can help you here if you do not want to wait for an appointment with your midwife or doctor.

Linseeds

The linen seeds are also very popular. Also from the 34th week on you can start to put on a tablespoon daily. If you like you can eat them pure or if you think that it is too dry: take a fresh piece of fruit and put it in the cereal or yogurt. The linen seeds are supposed to make the mucous membranes more slippery and help the child slide more easily through the birth canal. You can get linen seeds at the supermarket, drugstore or here.

Acupuncture

Pregnancy acupuncture is one of the measures even the health insurance company in Germany is convinced of and pays some of the costs. Depending on your health insurance, some or even all of the treatment will be covered.

At the end of the pregnancy from the 36th week of pregnancy onwards, the patient is peaked once a week. My midwife explained to me that acupuncture should speed up birth by 2 hours. Yes, I would rather invest the 2 hours in cuddling my newborn baby. 🙂

It is even possible to have acupuncture performed during birth to alleviate labor pains. Unfortunately, this is not possible everywhere, if it is possible for you, I would ask for it during the registration interview or/and write it in the birth plan.

One can also acupuncture other pregnancy complaints – water insoles, nervousness, sleep problems or back pain, actually almost everything. And many midwives can even insert the needles themselves.

Around the ET, the little toe is often acupunctured, because it promotes the contractions. I don’t want to anticipate anything, but this point is special – let me know if you have any experience here. 😀

Steam Bath

So now a little bit more action. 🙂 The steam bath should serve to prepare you “down there” for the stretch at birth. The tissue is loosened, relaxed and supple. And you can relax a little or read a book during this time. 🙂

If you want to prepare yourself for the time with your treasure during your steam bath, I recommend this book. There you will find answers to all your questions!

But back to the steam bath. For this you need hay flowers, if you can’t find them in the shop (I haven’t seen them anywhere yet) you can get them at your midwife or directly home here. And you also get some especially for postpartum!

The hay flowers are poured with boiling hot water and are then “ready to serve”. Regarding the ratio of dried hay flowers to water, look at the packaging. From the 38th week, the steaming can take place approx. every 3 days, but also have a look at the package insert.

Now comes the acrobatic part: How to steam yourself “down there”!

Here are a few possibilities:

  • You pour the whole thing into a bowl and squat over it. I personally don’t think it’s good because it’s neither relaxed nor completely safe.
  • You take a big, solid garbage bag, lift the toilet lid and put the bag in the toilet so that you can tip the hot hay flower mixture into it without it flushing down the toilet. Then put the toilet lid back down and on top. To dispose of the bath: simply tear a hole in the bag and off to the toilet. With a little practice probably possible but a small point deduction for sustainability. 🙂
  • If you have a “floor toilet” – haha no idea how to call it correctly – then you can also put the bowl in the toilet.
  • Or the way I chose because I found it the easiest is with a Bidget bowl. Now we’re probably at an age where you may not know it yet 😉 But that worked out great! Just hang up the basin, pour in the hot mixture, put down the lid and put it back on again.

Please make sure that it is not too hot when putting it on. Even if it seems cool enough with your hands, “down there” you are a bit more sensitive than your hands are. So do it very slowly. 🙂

The steam bath is also a great preparation for the next point…

Perineal Massage

That’s almost the only point I haven’t tried myself. But it is recommended by midwives and doctors. My midwife says that there is probably no proven effect on birth, but getting to know your dam a little better is always a good thing. 🙂

The perineum massage relaxes, loosens and perfuses the perineum and the “exit”. This should help to reduce the risk of a rupture or cut of the perineum.

The perineal massage should be started 6 weeks before the ET, i.e. after the 34th week, and then performed very regularly (only if at all!). That means, in order to achieve an effect, you have to do the massage almost daily or it was “in vain”. Whereby a small massage certainly also has other beautiful aspects. You can also ask your partner to do this. 🙂

After washing your hands and getting into a comfortable position, you take your oil, which is suitable for the genital area, like this for example, and start. Here you will find detailed instructions on what to do. Or explained here by a midwife (in German):

If you have mushrooms, inflammations or something similar, you should first talk to your gynecologist or midwife!

Dates

We learned in the birth preparation course that one of the most common home remedies for birth preparation in the warmer climes is the date. Starting from the 34th week 6 dates are to be eaten each day, this is to facilitate the birth.

That’s all I know, too. Personally, I like dates very much, so I used this household remedy with pleasure because it does no harm.

Even if 6 dates don’t sound like much, if you don’t have a real heaper, they are sometimes hard to get down. Here are a few consumption ideas:

  • You can eat them pure
  • Covered with bacon and off into the oven (suuuper tasty!)
  • You can make engery balls out of them
  • You can also eat them as dip / bread spread or bread
  • Or even as a cake
  • My insider tip: A date with a piece of 100% chocolate

But always make sure that your recipe is suitable for pregnancy!

How do you prefer to eat your dates?

Pelvic Floor

So, now to a point where you can start directly: Sports!

It still happens now and then that old-fashioned midwives say that the less sporty the pelvic floor is, the better it slips. However, my midwife assured me that this is outdated and even the opposite is the case. This means that the better your physical constitution, the more endurance, and strength you have at birth. Your body can then work better and thus support the birth.

Of course, you should pay attention to which sport is suitable for you during pregnancy. Bungee jumping, skiing and horse riding are not recommended. But as long as you are well and nothing hurts or pinches you can dance and do sports as much as you like but within reason of course. There are even courses that are directly designed to strengthen the pelvic floor and back. Hehe, a strong back for carrying and breastfeeding a lot, when the little angel is there, is also very grateful. 😉

Here in Hamburg, for example, there is SportSpaß, where you can attend all courses for just under 10 EUR a month and among other things also pregnancy sports and pregnancy yoga. You will notice that I am a big fan, who even with the little treasure you can visit toddler groups and do mummy-fitness, I love it!

If you don’t live in Hamburg or don’t want to have sports fun, you can look for pregnancy yoga or sports in your neighborhood. And in an emergency, the living room has to be here and a video has to be sent. 🙂

And I recommend two very useful utensils for pregnancy: a pezziball and a yoga pillow!

The mentioned workouts don’t need any utensils, but there are also really nice workouts with the Pezziball.

You can also train your pelvic floor and lower back while sitting. And with a growing belly, a yoga cushion is really comfortable. 🙂

PS: When you buy the gym ball, make sure you buy it in the right size depending on how tall you are. You should be able to place both feet comfortably on the floor with your knees at a right angle.

Sugar

I know, I know… You have to be strong now. The added sugar is unhealthy and poisonous etc., that’s on everyone’s lips nowadays (or not anymore ;-)). Whether you want to do without artificial sugar, in general, is worth a well-founded consideration, but another chapter. 🙂

If you are interested in the topic in general, I can recommend a book that has opened my eyes. Sometimes it comes at the right time, the right impulse and then it just “clicks”..

What can help you to give birth, however, is to actually give up sugar 6 weeks before the ET. On this information sheet it was summarized beautifully:

“Nutrition plays an important role for the beginning of the birth. Today we know that simple sugars (e.g. sweets, sodas, fruit juices), but also white flour products, significantly increase the blood sugar level. For a pregnant woman, this may have a detrimental effect on the beginning of the birth and the sensation of pain. High blood sugar levels inhibit prostaglandins (tissue hormones), which have a positive effect on birth. They make the cervix softer and are important for the development of labour pains. By checking and regulating your eating and drinking habits from 37 weeks of gestation onwards, you can influence your birth situation at an early stage. Keep moving because exercise also lowers your blood sugar level.”

In the information of the Vinzenz-Pallotti-Hospital Bensberg it says that 3 weeks before the ET you should avoid added sugar and white flour, but I read more often 6 weeks. I would rather play it safe. 😉

And my speech: “Keep moving”. 🙂

Homeopathy

For the sake of completeness, I would like to list that you can also prepare yourself and your body with homeopathic remedies. You should, of course, talk to the alternative practitioner you trust.

I am personally convinced that exercise and nutrition are sufficient, but I don’t know my way around this field very well.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy, also just quite big in the trend. Whether during pregnancy, at birth or afterward, osteopathy can help with almost everything.

What is osteopathy?

“Osteopathy is an independent form of medicine. It is used to recognize and treat dysfunctions. It uses its own techniques, which are carried out with the hands. Osteopathy perceives each patient as an individual and treats him as a whole. It is therefore a holistic form of medicine”.

The Osteopathic Association explains how gentle healing methods can help during pregnancy and facilitate childbirth:

“Pregnancy brings with it many changes. Not only is the mother’s body subject to a multitude of physical, structural and hormonal changes, but her emotional state also changes again and again. Osteopaths, through their holistic, gentle and respectful approach, are able to contribute to the increased well-being of pregnant women, to the preparation of a gentle, often shorter and less complicated delivery and to the alleviation of possible complaints afterwards.”

In fact, osteopathy can even be used during childbirth, and if that’s a possibility for you, I’d talk to your birthplace about it beforehand. Here in Hamburg, one of the birth centers even cooperates with osteopaths. Pretty cool!

Even with newborns osteopathy can already be applied and should help with numerous complaints. Whether colic, reflux or after a forceps/bell birth, if you don’t know what to do, then the osteopath could be a good place to go!

Sooo many possibilities and home remedies!

Well, are you surprised that you have so much in your hand? To implement all of this could be a full-time job for you. 😉

So don’t go crazy – take the things that feel right for you and where you think they could help you with birth preparation.

Except for sports, that’s what I would advise you to do if your situation really allows it. And if it is calm yoga, the main thing is that you are in motion and have your time for yourself and your baby. Besides, you often get to know nice other mamas-to-be. Try it out!
